10/4/10
This past weekend the Hawks downed Bellarmine University 3-1 and Kentucky Wesleyan University 4-0 to run their overall record to 7-3 with a 6-2 mark in the GLVC. The victory over KWU helped Hawk Coach Jack Mackenzie reach the 500 win milestone.
The BU game was a fast-paced affair battled out on the Knight's home artificial turf. After staving off an opening flurry of BU shots the Hawks jumped in front at the 37th minute mark when striker Jack Wedemeier (senior from Cape Norte Dame)bravely headed in a swerving cross from left fullback Carl Hodgfes (sophomore from Sedgefield, England)who swung the ball toward the far post on the dead run from the left sideline over 35 yards out.
In the second half, junior striker Grant Ellison (St. Dominic HS) scored two beautiful goals, the first of which came in the 65 minute with a nifty assist pass again coming from left back Carl Hodges. Ellison's second score at the 81st minute mark came off a neat set-up laid on by fellow striker Jack Wedemeier. The Knights scored a late consolation goal at the 85th minute mark to close out the scoring.
On Sunday 10/3 the Hawks battled a determined Kentucky Wesleyan squad to a nil-nil half time standoff. During the opening 45 minutes of action KWU sat back in a defensive shell and repelled every attack the Hawks launched at them. In the second half, Hawk patience and persistance paid off quickly with striker Grant Ellison snatching the opening goal in less than three minutes of the restart. Carl Hodges supplied the assist, his third of the weekend. Twenty-four minutes later Jeff Vaninger (sophomore from CBC HS) gave the Hawks some breathing room when he slashed through the penalty area after receiving a pass from Corey Eatherton (senior from Summit HS) rounded the goalie and deposited the ball into the back of the net. Seven minutes later Jeff and Corey reversed roles as Vaninger registered an assist by supplying Eatherton with a pass that Corey took and snaked around a couple defenders and then hit a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. Jack Wedemeier finished off the Hawk scoring in the 82nd minute when he took a chest trap off a cross from Mike Andres (sophomore from DeSmet HS) and then side-vollyed a blast in from about 14 yards out.
The Hawks continue GLVC action this weekend when they play host to the University of Indianapolis on Friday 10/8 at 7:30 PM and then take on Northern Kentucky University on Sunday 10/10 at 2:30 PM. Both matches take place at QU's North Campus Filed. If you're in the vacinity come on out and root the Hawks on to victory.
