Soccer Hawks Post Two GLVC Wins...

On Friday 9/17 the Soccer Hawks defeated Maryville University 7-2 to record their first GLVC win of the 2010 season. Striker Grant Ellison (Jr. from St. Dominic HS) notched a 3-goal “hat trick” to lead the way, with left back Carl Hodges (So. from Sedgefield, Eng.) nodding in two head-ball goals. Striker Jack Wedemeier (Sr. from Cape Notre Dame) converted a PK, and Jeff Vaninger (So. from CBC) chalked up the final tally on a breakaway attack. Winger Corey Eatherton (Sr. form Summit HS) supplied two assists, and Zach Venvertloh (So. from Quincy Sr. High) had one.

Sunday 9/19 saw the Hawks win a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind contest with Missouri S & T with Jack Wedemeier’s 30 yard free kick with just 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. The Hawks fell behind just 1:06 into the first half but fought back to level the score at 1-1 at the 26 minute mark when Ryan Seifert (Fr. from St. Dominic HS) eluded a couple defenders and stroked a nice curling shot in from just outside the 18 yard line. S & T took the lead again just 8 minutes later with the half ending at 2-1 for S & T. The Hawks started strong in the second half and were rewarded in the 74th minute when winger Corey Eatherton ran on to a miss-cleared ball just outside the 18 and hit a nice drive just inside the far post leveling the score at 2-2. The Hawks pushed the attack over the next 16 minutes of regular time and throughout each of the two 10 minute overtime periods. With just under a minute remaining in the final OT period the Hawks drew a foul about 30 out from the Miner’s goal, and with just 36 seconds remaining on the scoreboard clock Jack Wedemeier drove in the game winner earning QU their second GLVC win of the weekend.

Tomorrow 9/21 the Hawks travel to COSMO Park in Columbis MO for the make up game with Drury that was halted due to lightning on 9/10. Kick-off is slated for 7 PM.
