SOCCER HAWKS BEAT UWP AND LEWIS

9/19/11

Homecoming Weekend saw the Hawks post two very important GLVC wins over UWP (Wisconsin-Parkside), and Lewis Universities. The Hawks are now 4-1-1 and 3-0-1 in the GLVC.

On Friday 9/16 Grant Ellison scored on one of his patented breakaway runs at the 85minute mark to snatch the victory. Ryan Seifert fed Grant a nice through ball for the assist. Grant is a senior from St. Dominic's HS and Ryan is a sophomore from St. Dominic's also. With usual starting keeper DJ Lampert sidelined with a knee injury, Drew Duncan (red-shirt freshman from CBC) stepped in between the posts and did an excellent job recording 9 saves, several quite spectatular, to earn the shutout win. This was a fiercely contested match played at a very intense pace.

On Sunday, 9/18 the Hawks jumped out to an early lead over Lewis with two goals in the first 10 minutes of action. Jordan Roberts, a freshman striker from England, kick-started the game with a nice curling shot in the 5th minute for his first collegiate goal, and Grant Ellison blasted home a PK in the 10th minute. After that the game settled down and Lewis started to come back and notched their only goal at the 23 minute mark. Most of the second half saw each team take turns pressing the action. However, in the final 10 minutes of the second half the Hawks rejuvenated and got a "killing" 3rd goal on a great shot by Jeff Vaninger (CBC) from outside the Penalty Area into the far upper corner of the net in the 83rd minute. And then Grant Ellison closed out the scoring with a nify flick header off a nice crossing pass by Jordan Roberts. Once again Drew Duncan was in goal and although he allowed one goal he also came up with 6 important saves. Like the Parkside match, and for that matter all the Hawk matches so far, this was another very intense game. The Hawks are playing strong, determined soccer and they have to because every game on their schedule is against a top-notch opponent. The GLVC is truly a very fine collegiate soccer Conference.

The wins over Parkside and Lewis are important in the GLVC Conference standings, and were the first over both of these teams in the same season since 1998. Tis coming weekend the Hawks afre on the road playing at St. Joseph's College on Friday night 9/23 at 7:30 PM and then playing at U. of Indianapolis on Sunday 9/25 at 2:30 PM. If you happen to be in the vacinity of either of these schools come on by and support our team.
