9/12/11
On Friday, September 9th, QU and UMSL battled to a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes of action. The game might be visualized as two strong rams bashing heads on a mountainside. Neither side gave the other any time or space to get any control of play so the action streaked back and forth, end to end, at a fast pace. The Brown & White outshot the visitors 19-13, but each had 6 shots on frame. UMSL had the edge in corner kicks 5-1, and each keepeer had 6 saves, both pulling off a couple of truly game-saving stops.
On Sunday, September 11th, the Hawks traveled to St. Louis and out kicked the Maryville Saints 3-1. Winger, Jeff Vaninger got the Hawks out in front 1-0 with a blast from about 15 yards out at the 25 minute mark of the first half. The Hawks, though leading, were not in full contrl of the match and surrendered a goal to the Saints with about 8 minutes remaining before half-time. Vaninger once again pushed QU into the lead about 5 minutes after the half-time interval when he stole a ball from a defender and was successful on a quick strike past the keeper. Striker, Grant Ellison, finished off the Saints hopes by converting a nice assist pass from left back Carl Hodges with a smooth left footed shot into the far corner of the goal, well away from the helpless goal keeper.
Both matches were important GLVC contests and place the Hawks around the middle of the pack in the 16 team GLVC table with a 1-0-1 record after the first weekend of games. GLVC action resumes in Quincy this Friday night, 9/16, at 7:30 PM when QU meets Wisconsin-Parkside, and continues on Sunday, September 18, at 2:30 PM when they face Lewis University. This is Homecoming Weekend, a time to "Get Back Where Once You Belonged", right here on the QU campus.
