9/5/11
The Soccer Hawks opened their 2011 season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Lindenwood University on Saturday night to kick-off Soccer Bowl XVII. Senior striker, Grant Ellison, notched two goals, and midfielder Nate Heryford scored one. Freshman Ethan Venvertloh had two assists on the night, and Jeff Vaninger served up one. All in all the Hawks played very well throughout the match outshooting the Lions 11 to 6 and holding a 5 to 0 edge in corner kicks won during their first win of the season.
On Sunday, the Hawks started off fast against Truman State scoring in the 17th minute with a breakaway goal by Grant Ellison, with the assist going to Jeff Vaninger. However, the Hawks let the game slip away from them for about a 20 minute period after their goal and allowed the "Dogs" of TSU to take over and score twice before half-time. The Hawks regrouped during the half-time interval and pretty much dominated the whole second half but could not find an equalizing goal. Unfortunately, although outshooting TSU 10 to 3 in the second half, and 22 to 9 throughout the game, the Hawks suffered their first loss of the season.
Missouri S & T who defeated TSU 2-0 on Saturday night and Lindenwood 2-1 on Sunday night won Soccer Bowl XVII being the only undefeated team in the tournament.
On Friday night, September 9, the Hawks will open up their home GLVC season against the visiting Tritons of UMSL, at 7:30 PM at North Campus Field. On Sunday, September 11, the Hawks will travel to St. Louis to play at Maryville University at 2:30 PM. If you get a chance come out and support the team.
GO HAWKS.
