On Sunday, October 5th the Hawks defeated the University of Southern Indiana 4-3 and on Monday, October 6th they defeated Bellarmine University 3-, with both games played on the road.
In Sunday’s USI’s game the Hawks were awarded a PK just two minutes into the match, but missed it. Over the course of the rest of the half the Hawks had several other good opportunities to score but were either denied by the opposing keeper or shots narrowly missed. Eight minutes into the second half USI broke the scoreless deadlock with a goal for a 1-0 lead. That score fortunately aroused the Hawks who then went on a scoring spree with Grant Ellison notching 3 goals in an eleven minute span. Grant’s incisive runs and accurate shooting were assisted by Corey Eatherton, Ryan Hirtz, and Jayme Groark. However, the Screaming Eagles fought back with a goal of their own at the 79th minute mark to draw them closer at 3-2 but that score line only lasted a minute until Jake Pittroff put the Hawks back up 4-2. The final 10 minutes of the match were action packed with both teams having additional opportunities to score and USI eventually netting a late goal in the 90th minute to round out the score at 4-3 in favor of QU and a precious GLVC win.
On Monday, October 6th the Hawks played Bellarmine in Evansville (IN) in the make up of their game that was previously rained out back on September 14. The Hawks started the Bellarmine match without the services of Grant Ellison their hat trick scorer of the day before. On Grant’s third goal in the Sunday game he pulled a hamstring muscle and did not have the mobility to suit up against Bellarmine. Even without Ellison the Hawks got off to a flying start with a nicely orchestrated goal in the 11th minute when Jayme Groark sent in a cross from the left wing that sailed all the way across and past the far bar where CoreyEatherton met it with a header that he played back into the middle of the goal mouth for Justin Bower to run on to and knock in. Then, 23 minutes later Groark was again free on the left wing to play in another cross to the far bar where this time Corey Eatherton met it with a volley into the net to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Hawks. At the 73rd minute BU scored to make it a 2-1 game and the action was fast and furious from that point on with both teams challenging each other with all they had. At the 85th minute Abe Dirnberger while applying pressure to BU’s right back and won the ball and played into Greg Schaeffer who slid the ball under the BU keeper to make the final score 3-1 for the Hawks third victory since Wednesday October 1st and another important GLVC win.
Next up for the Hawks is a date with nationally ranked Lewis University on Friday, October 10th. Kick-off is slated at 5 PM.
GO HAWKS.
