8/23/10
The Soccer Hawks opened up their pre-season scrimmage/exhibition schudule with a 3-1 win over the Alumni on Saturday 8/21. The Alumni were well represented with about a 20 man squad of guys who came to really test the current Hawk squad. Without benefit of training together as a team prior to this game, and surely not as fit as the young curennt Hawks, the Alums gave a very good effort throughout the entire match. They even scored a consolation goal with just about 2 seconds left on the clock showing their "never give up" spitit that served them so well when they played here.
The curent Hawks pressed the action most of the way right from the opening kick-off and were rewarded with 2 goals in the opening half. Striker Grant Ellison, who missed all of the 2009 regular season due to injury, got both of the tallies. Late in the second half striker Jeff Vaninger notched a breakaway goal to push the scoreline to 3-0 for the Varsity, just before the Alumni's game ending goal.
The Hawk coaching staff used the match to get all available players into the match. Returning starters and top reserves from 2009 got a 60 minute shift on the field, and
newcomers got a 30 minute run out to show what they could do. All in all it was a good workout for everyone and the match gave the Hawk coaching staff their first evaluation of the 2010 Hawks.
The next exhibition match will be Tuesday 8/24 at North Campus Field when Hannibal LaGrange College visits for a 6 PM kick-off. Last season these two sides battled to a 6-6 tie after two overtime periods.
On Saturday 8/28 WIU will journey to Quincy for another 6 PM kick-off at North Campus Field.
