5/24/10
The recently completed QU Soccer Alumni Golf Shootout was another SUCCESS. The weather held up nicely with NO RAIN and moderate temperature providing the perfect atmosphere for the 30 foursomes that teed off. Judging from the looks of everyone passing through the 10th Tee and gathered for dinner it was evident that a good time was had by all. Once again the golf committee put on a great event, and once again a large number of alumni players and friends of QU soccer showed up to enjoy a fun-filled day and provide support for the QU Soccer Hawks.
GREAT NEWS...QU Athletic Director, Marty Bell, has informed me that the 1981 QU Soccer Hawk Team is going to be inducted into the QU Sports Hall of Fame on the weekend of September 24-26, 2010. The '81 Soccer Hawks hold the QU record for the most number of wins in a single soccer season (21) and were the squad to capture QU's record fifth consecuative NAIA National Championship, a national record. It's hoped that all the players from that great team can make it back for the celebration at the Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday 9/25, and to watch the current Hawks play Southern Indiana on Friday (9/24 at 7:30 PM) and UMSL on Sunday (9/26 at 2:30 PM). So mark the dates. More information will be coming from the Alumni Office later in the summer.
IMPORTANT DATE (another)...The Fall Alumni Soccer Game will be played on Saturday August 21 at 6 PM at QU's North Campus Field. This is a great way to kick off the 2010 season.
More information will be coming on this later also.
Have a GREAT SUMMER.

HAWKS DEFEAT CULVER 6-0
On Saturday 5/1 the Soccer Hawks defeated Culver-Stockton College 6-0 after building up a 4-0 lead by halftime to close out their abreviated spring schedule.
With their previous match with Hannibal-LaGrange (4/24) cancelled due to rain and lightning, and with quite a bit of rain on Friday 4/30 the Hawks were just hoping to get a game in on Saturday, May 1. Once the weather cleared up and they were able to step out on their beautifully manicured North Campus Field pitch the Hawks showed just how anxious they were to play by clicking off goals at the 17th, 25th, 42nd, and 45th minute marks for a commanding half time lead. Jack Wedemeier, Co-Captain striker (Cape Notre Dame HS) got the Hawk's first two tallys and his co-striker Grant Ellison (St. Dominic HS) notched number three. Goal number four was knocked in by Co-Captain central defender Abe Dirnberger (Cape Notre Dame HS). Ellison assisted on one of Wedemeier's goals and on Dirnberger's as well.
The second half saw Culver come out more determined to stop the QU onslought but the Hawks were still able to convert two more scoring chances. At the 68th minute mark Wedeimeier hit a terrific free kick past the Wildcat defensive wall for Quincy's 5th goal on the day and Jack's third to complete his hat-trick. Later, with just seven minutes remaining in the match striker Jeff Vaninger (CBC HS) tallied to make the final score 6-0 for the QU Hawks.
This match wrapped up the 2010 spring season during which QU defeated WIU, and William Woods along with Culver-Stockton. The Hawks will begin their fall training camp when they report back to campus on Sunday, August 15 and start practices on Monday, August 16.
Also of note, on Thursday April 29th the Soccer Hawks once again won the Athletic Director's Academic Achievement Award for having the highest team GPA among all the Male Sports Teams at QU. This is the 5th year in a row they have garnered this honor, and 8th out of the past nine years.
Once again, the QU Soccer Alumni Golf Shootout is slated for Friday, May 21st at Clinton Hill Golf Course in Swansea (IL), just about 15 minutes east of the St. Louis Arch. You are invited to be an individual player ($100) or foursome ($400); to be a T-Box sponsor ($100); or if you have any item(s) of value to donate to our auction they'd be appreciated. To "get connected" you can contact Jim Eagan at jim.eagan@wwt.com and copy Craig Hingle at candkhingle@mindspring.com. For any information you can also e-mail Coach Jack Mackenzie at mackejb@quincy.edu .
