Sunday 11/1 saw the QU Soccer Hawks fall 1-0 to the Lewis University Flyers in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament. The Flyers, as host team, entered the match as the 3rd seeded team in the eight team GLVC tourney while QU came in as the 6th seed. The match was a battle from beginning to end. Lewis' goal came with about one minute remaining in the first half when their 1st Team All-Conference striker, Nestor Hernandez, slipped away and flicked in a cross at the far post. Hernandez, an excellent player, was actually kept pretty much in check throughout the whole game until he eluded coverage on this one play. Prior to Lewis' winning goal the Hawks had a couple of chances of their own but failed to cash in. However, for the match the Flyers did have more possession, shots, and corner kicks but the Hawks "hung in tough" by playing some very good defense which muted all other Flyer attacks but the fatal one.
The loss put QU's final record for the season at 9-8-2 (7-5-1 in the GLVC). On the season the Hawks scored 30 goals and allowed 27 which meant that every game was "up for grabs". In fact, eleven games were one goal matches with the Hawks winning 7 of these and losing 4.
Sunday's loss ended the career of 4 seniors, goal keeper Kyle Dillman, defenders Tom Dawson and Scott Greubel, and midfielder Jayme Groark, all full-time starters. A 5th senior, Andy Kling, was injured for the entire season and did not get to play at all in 2009. Although he will graduate in May along with the others, Andy still has one season of eligibility left should he choose to play in graduate school next fall. All five of these players have been a great asset to the QU Soccer Hawks and to the over-all QU community. They will be greatly missed. Best wishes to all of them as they move on in life.
