More Awards for Soccer Hawks

12/8/10

The GLVC recently released the winner of the Conference Sportsmanship Award for the 2010 season and the QU Soccer Hawks are co-recipients along with Missouri S & T. This marks the second time in the last four seasons that the Hawks have been honored with this award.

Also recently announced is that the Hawks have once again been honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)with their Team Academic Award for having a team GPA above 3.0. This is the 9th time out of the last 10 years that the players have earned this academic accomplishment.

All in all 2010 was a pretty good year for the QU soccer program. The pre-season GLVC poll had the Hawks pegged as finishing 7th but their 9-4-1 league record landed them in 4th place after the regular season concluded and saw them reach the GLVC Tournament semi-final where they were nipped 1-0 by UIndy with only 2 minutes left in the second overtime. The team then earned only its second NCAA DII National Tournament bid ever and took Northern Kentucky University seven minutes deep into overtime before the Norse prevailed 2-1, leaving the Hawks with a 11-7-2 overall final record. NKU then went on to win their next four matches and won the National Championship. Four Hawk players (Wedemeier, Ellison, Lampert, Dirnberger) made the All-GLVC team, and three (Wedemeier, Ellison, Lampert) were selected ALL-Region. These accomplishments along with receiving the GLVC Sportsmanship Award and the NSCAA Academic Award indeed make 2010 a quality year for soccer at Quincy University.

Six quality seniors provided the leadership and spark so vital to this season's successes. Graduating this May will be Co-Captains Jack Wedemeier and Abe Dirnberger, both from Notre Dame HS in Cape Girardeau MO; Jake Pittroff and Greg Schaeffer, both from Oakville HS in St. LOuis MO; Corey Eatherton, from Summit HS in Fenton MO; and Ryan Hirtz, from St. Dominic HS in OFallon MO. They will be really missed by their teammates and coaches. Best wishes to them as they pursue their other life goals.

12/6/10

CONGRATULATIONS to Senior striker, Jack Wedemeier (Cape Notre Dame), and Junior striker Grant Ellison (St. Dominic HS)for being selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)All-Midwest Second Team, and to Sophomore goal keeper DJ Lampert (Lutheran South HS)for his selection to the Third Team. This is the first time since 2005 that three Hawks have been honored on the All-Region Team during the same year. Earlier, Ellison had been selected to the Daktronics All-Midwest First Team.

For the 2010 season Ellison finished with 15 goals and 1 assist, while Wedemeier recorded 9 goals and 6 assists. Lampert, played every minute of every game in goal and posted a very low .93 goals against average. All three started each of the Hawk's 20 matches during the fall season that ended on November 12th with a 2-1 OT loss to Northern Kentucky University in the opening round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament. NKU, like Quincy a GLVC member, won the 2010 National Championship this past Saturday.
